What is the time zone?
Time zone is an imaginary point Kept as a reference for determining the
time of a region or a country. Let’s take the example of India, The 82.5-degree
longitude is taken as the reference point for determining the times throughout
the country. suppose the along is longitude is 3:00 p.m. and then the time in
Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi, or any other place in India is also 3:00 p.m.
Why do we need time zones?
have you ever wondered how the new year celebration happened first in
Australia and Japan before other countries do? It is because the earth is a rotating sphere and it is not at the same time across the globe.
The earth complete one rotation in 24 hours at a speed of 15 degrees per
hour and hence that is the difference of one hour 15-degree longitude of the
earth
The world is divided into 24 longitudinal zone not all time zones are
exactly one hour apart, few are drawn 35 to 40 minutes apart to include
countries and avoid confusion. The zero degrees longitude of the earth passing
through Greenwich London is the reference point for measuring all the time
zones in the world.
This midpoint is known as the Prime Meridian or the Greenwich Meridian. Time
at the Greenwich Meridian is known as a Greenwich Meridian time. The region to
the east of the Prime Meridian has GMT + hours and the region to the west has
GMT - hours based on its distance from the zero degrees longitude.
Example:- Indian time zone is GMT + 5:30 and our eastern time zone is GMT
-5. If it is 12 p.m. in the Greenwich Meridian the time in India and the US
will be 5:30 p.m. and 7 A.M respectively.
What is the importance of having timezones?
Before 1800 there was no standard time people follow the Solar time
it was known when the sun was overhead and at night when they could see the stars
in the sky. people adjust their clocks on observing the sun and stars. Due to
the advancement of communication, trade, and travel, it became necessary to
introduce multiple time zones in the world.
Why Greenwich?
There were two main reasons for the choice. The first was the fact that
the USA had already chosen Greenwich as a basis for its own national time zone
system. The second was that in the late 19th century 72% of the world's
commerce dependent on sea started with using Greenwich as the Prime Meridian. The
decision was based on the argument that by name in Greenwich as longitude zero degrees
it will be advantages to the largest number of people. Science during the 19th
Century Europe and us were the dominant traders in the world.
Why do few countries have multiple time zones?
some of the large countries stretches to About more than 20-degree
longitudinal regions will require more than one time zone for advancement in social and economic conditions. For example, France has 12 time zones to
accommodate a few of the far of islands it owns. There as The USA has 9 time
zones. similarly, some in India have voiced the need to want multiple time zone
for the country.
What is the scene with time zones in India?
Pre-independence India had two time zones in the east Calcutta time was
5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT. while Bombay time in the West was 4 hours 51
minutes ahead of GMT. Kolkata time was abandoned in 1948 and Bombay time in
1955. India Today has a single time zone running through Allahabad at 82.5
degrees longitude. India stretches from about 68 degrees east to 296 degrees east.
how is having a single time zone a problem for India?
As mentioned above there is a time difference of one hour 15-degree
longitude and hence there is a difference of about two hours between the
eastern and western parts of India. The Eastern part is 1 hour ahead of a
standard time where as the western part is one hour behind the standard time of
India. This difference in time majorly affects the Eastern part since they get
less daylight as compared to the western part.
To explain it better-
let's take an example to suppose the
government offices' work time is specified to be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. then
people in Delhi work from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as their geographical close the
India Prime Meridian. Whereas the people in Assam who are one hour ahead of
the IST will have their working hours from 11 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the people
in Gujarat who are one hour behind the IST will have their working hours
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Since the people in the east start working at 11:00 a.m.
about pre 24 hours of Daylight time is wasted. This results in low productivity
and ends up working late into evening result in high power consumption after
the sunset this brings great a disadvantage to an already struggling economy of the North East. Starting and finishing the work and our area in his will save one
hour of electricity utilization at offices.
India had resorted to a single time zone at the time of independence to
hardness the thought of nationality and *Unity. But today's India is yet to
deliver on its promise of development and inclusion. Even now the country has
to make modifications and changes to its clocks in railways Airways, business, and others fear the North East regions deserve it. In fact, for years Assam
plantation has revised and has been using their own unofficial chai Bagan
time for free time which is an hour ahead of IST.
The United States expense around 4600 kilo-meter from east to west and
follows 9 different time zones and seamlessly managers. India extending around
3000 km from east to west should preferably have at least two time zones.
Time zones are majorly for the convenience of human beings and un disturb the functioning of the Government and the economic growth of a country having two
time zones in India will ensure maximum utilization of the Northeast economy and
stand true to his idea of inclusive development.
